TikTok video size
1080 × 1920 px (9:16, the size guides recommend), at least 720 px wide, up to 60 minutes; In-Feed ads need at least 540 × 960
TikTok asks for 720 × 1280 or higher, and the guides agree on 1080 × 1920. Drop in a video to check its shape, size, file and length against TikTok’s own pages, or make a cover from one of its frames and see how the profile grid will crop it. It all runs in your browser.

TikTok Support says videos uploaded to TikTok Studio must be an MP4 or WebM file, 720 × 1280 resolution or higher, and less than 10 GB. It does not name a recommended size. Hootsuite’s September 2026 guide gives 1080 × 1920 at 9:16 and says other shapes get black bars, so the table marks that as a guide. TikTok’s ad sizes are different: the Ads Manager lists minimums for each shape rather than one recommended size, and the checker words them that way.

The checker reads “720 × 1280 or higher” as a width of at least 720 pixels, because TikTok does not say how a landscape video should be measured.
How the checker works
- Your video’s width, height, file size, type and length are read in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- Its shape is compared with the format you picked (9:16 for an upload, and 9:16, 16:9 or 1:1 for an ad). A match within 1% counts as the same shape.
- Its width is compared with TikTok’s minimum. For an ad, both sides must reach the minimum, and the result says “minimum”, not “recommended”.
- Its type, file size and length are compared with TikTok’s lists. A video between 30 and 60 minutes is marked “Fits with changes”, because TikTok’s pages disagree about the limit.
- To make a cover, choose the TikTok cover format, scrub a video to the frame you want (or drop in an image) and download it at 1080 × 1920. Turn on “Grid view” to see what the profile grid cuts.
TikTok video length and file limits
TikTok Support’s camera tools page says videos you record in TikTok can be up to 10 minutes long, and videos you upload in TikTok can be up to 60 minutes. The TikTok Studio help page lists 30 minutes for uploads. Both are TikTok’s own pages and they do not agree, so the checker treats 60 minutes as the limit and marks anything over 30 minutes as “Fits with changes”, with a note. The file must be an MP4 or WebM under 10 GB. TikTok’s Studio upload screen itself is behind a log-in, so we could not read it.
TikTok cover size
TikTok Support describes a video cover as the thumbnail that previews your video in places like your profile or search results, and says you can select it before posting. It gives no size, and we found none elsewhere on TikTok’s pages. Social Toolshed (31 July 2026) gives 1080 × 1920 and reports that the profile grid shows a centred 3:4 crop of it, a crop it says it measured in the app rather than took from a TikTok page. So the cover formats here are guides. Pick a cover on the TikTok cover format, scrub to the frame, and use “Grid view” to keep the important part where the grid shows it.
Choose the cover before you post
TikTok’s help describes choosing the cover on the post screen, before the video goes up.
Keep the title in the middle
If the grid shows a centred 3:4 slice, a 9:16 cover loses about 12.5% from the top and from the bottom.
The caption and the buttons on the right
On a normal post, TikTok draws your username, caption and sound along the bottom left, and the like, comment, save, share and profile buttons down the right edge, all on top of the video. TikTok does not publish a margin for them on organic posts, and a long caption reaches higher up the screen. Keep words, faces and products out of the bottom of the frame and away from the right-hand side, and check the posted video on a phone before you rely on it.
Myah’s Instagram safe zone checker shows the same problem on your own file for Reels and Stories, which put their buttons in similar places.
TikTok ad specs
For non-Spark In-Feed ads, TikTok’s Ads Manager (updated June 2026) lists three shapes: vertical 9:16 at 540 × 960 or more, which it recommends, horizontal 16:9 at 960 × 540 or more, and square 1:1 at 640 × 640 or more. The file can be an MP4, MOV, MPEG, 3GP or AVI, up to 10 minutes and 500 MB, with a bitrate of at least 516 kbps. Spark Ads, which promote a post that already exists, take an MP4 or MOV with no duration limit. TikTok shows an ad’s caption in white in a font you cannot change.
TikTok does not give one safe-zone margin. It says the safe zone depends on the ad’s shape, its caption length and any extra formats, and publishes downloadable files for each. Download the one that matches your ad rather than copying a number. For the equivalent on Instagram, see the Instagram safe zone checker.
Who it’s for
UGC creators
Check a video before you send it to a brand, and make a clean cover from your best frame at the size a brand will expect.
Brands and media buyers
Check that a creator’s file meets the In-Feed ad minimums, file type, size and length before it goes into an ad account.
Editors and social managers
Export once at the right size and file type, and see what the profile grid does to a cover first.
Common mistakes
Mixing up the ad minimum and the upload minimum
An In-Feed ad can be as small as 540 × 960, but TikTok Studio asks for 720 × 1280 or higher for an upload. A 540 × 960 file passes as an ad and fails as an upload.
Trusting one length for every account
TikTok Support says 60 minutes for uploads in one place and 30 in another. If a long upload is refused, the limit on your upload screen is the one that counts.
A MOV for an organic upload
TikTok Studio lists MP4 or WebM for uploads. MOV is on the ads list. Export an MP4 for a post.
A cover title near the top or bottom
A guide reports that the profile grid shows a centred 3:4 slice of a 9:16 cover, so words near the top or bottom edge can be cut. Keep the title in the middle.
An ad over 500 MB or ten minutes
A non-Spark In-Feed ad is limited to 500 MB and ten minutes. Compress it, or run it as a Spark Ad, which has no duration limit.
Designing an ad without TikTok’s safe zone file
TikTok says an ad’s safe zone depends on its shape, the caption length and any extra formats, and gives downloadable files, not one margin. Download the file that matches your ad.
Common questions
What size is a TikTok video?
TikTok Support says uploads to TikTok Studio must be 720 × 1280 resolution or higher. It does not give a recommended size, and Hootsuite’s September 2026 guide gives 1080 × 1920 at 9:16, adding that a video in another shape gets black bars to fill the screen.
How long can a TikTok video be?
TikTok Support says videos you record in TikTok can be up to 10 minutes and videos you upload in TikTok can be up to 60 minutes. Its TikTok Studio help page lists 30 minutes for uploads. The two pages disagree, so check the limit shown when you upload.
What file type and size does TikTok accept?
For uploads, TikTok Support lists MP4 or WebM, less than 10 GB. For ads, TikTok’s Ads Manager lists MP4, MOV, MPEG, 3GP and AVI, with a file size of 500 MB or less.
What size is a TikTok cover?
We could not find a cover size on TikTok’s own pages. TikTok Support only says a video cover is the thumbnail that previews your video in places like your profile or search results, and that you choose it before posting. Social Toolshed (July 2026) gives 1080 × 1920 and reports a centred 3:4 crop on the profile grid, which it measured in the app rather than from a TikTok page.
What are the specs for TikTok In-Feed ads?
TikTok’s Ads Manager (June 2026) lists three shapes for non-Spark ads: vertical 9:16 at 540 × 960 or more (recommended), horizontal 16:9 at 960 × 540 or more, and square 1:1 at 640 × 640 or more. It also lists up to 10 minutes and 500 MB, and no duration limit for Spark Ads.
Can I check a video before posting it to TikTok, without uploading it?
Yes. The video is read by your browser alone, so it never reaches TikTok, Myah or any server, and nothing is posted. A cover you make from one of its frames is made on your device too. A shared link only carries your chosen format and settings.
