Instagram post size
1080 × 1350 px (4:5), or 1080 × 1440 px (3:4) for the tallest post
Instagram now accepts photos from 1.91:1 up to 3:4. Drop in a photo to see whether it fits, how the profile grid will crop it, and download a copy at exactly the right size. It all runs in your browser.
| Format | Pixels | Ratio |

Instagram does not publish one “official” post size. Its Help Center gives a range: photos keep their quality up to 1080 pixels wide, and Instagram accepts shapes from 1.91:1 (wide) to 3:4 (tall), which is a height of 566 to 1440 pixels at 1080 pixels wide. If a photo’s shape is outside that range, Instagram crops it to fit. If it is wider than 1080 pixels, Instagram sizes it down; if it is narrower than 320, Instagram enlarges it to 320. The table turns that range into the sizes people use. Pixel sizes for 4:5 and 1:1 follow from the ratio; the others are the two ends of Instagram’s range.
| Format | Pixels | Ratio | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portrait 4:5Best for the feed | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | Instagram lists the range, not this size: it is 1080 px wide at this ratio. Buffer (17 Mar 2026) lists the same size. Instagram Help Center (official). |
| Tall portrait 3:4Tallest allowed | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 | The tallest height Instagram lists at 1080 px wide. Instagram Help Center (official). |
| Square 1:1Classic | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Instagram lists the range, not this size: it is 1080 px wide at this ratio. Buffer (17 Mar 2026) lists the same size. Instagram Help Center (official). |
| Landscape 1.91:1Widest allowed | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 | The widest shape Instagram lists, at its shortest height of 566 px. Instagram Help Center (official). |
Some guides, including Hootsuite (4 September 2026), still describe the range as 1.91:1 to 4:5 and attribute it to the same Help Center page. On 16 October 2026 that page said 3:4, so this page follows Instagram’s own text. Instagram’s page states no file-size limit for photos, so none is checked here.
How the checker works
- Your photo’s width, height and file size are read in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- Its shape is compared with the format you picked. A match within 1% counts as the same shape. If it is a different shape but inside Instagram’s range, Instagram keeps it whole and the download crops it. If it is outside the range, Instagram crops it.
- Its width is compared with Instagram’s 1080 pixel rule: wider is sized down, narrower is shared as it is, and under 320 is enlarged.
- The download crops to fill (the biggest slice with the right shape, which you can move) or fits the whole photo on white or black bars, at the exact size of the format.
The grid view is a guide. Instagram does not publish how its profile grid crops a post, so the slice comes from Hootsuite (September 2026) and Buffer (March 2026), and it is labelled that way in the preview.
Instagram carousel size
Up to 20 photos and videos. The orientation you choose (square, portrait or landscape) applies to every item. Instagram’s Help Center also says you can drag each photo or video to adjust how it is cropped, and that videos in a carousel are not Reels. Because one orientation applies to every item, pick the shape of your most important photo and crop the rest to match before you upload. Use the checker once per photo with the same format selected, and download each copy at the same size.
Square, 4:5 or 3:4?
Square 1:1
1080 × 1080. The classic shape, and the one that changes most on the profile grid: about 12.5% is cut from each side (a guide). Keep faces and text away from the left and right edges.
Portrait 4:5
1080 × 1350. The usual choice for the feed. Buffer calls it the format Instagram recommends for feed posts; Instagram’s own Help Center lists a range, not a favourite. The grid trims about 3% from each side.
Tall portrait 3:4
1080 × 1440. The tallest shape Instagram accepts. It matches the profile grid, so nothing is cut there, and it takes the most room in the feed.
Landscape 1.91:1
1080 × 566. The widest shape Instagram accepts, and the one the grid crops hardest, to a centred 3:4 slice. Use it when the picture really is wide.
Hootsuite’s September 2026 guide reports that vertical shapes such as 4:5 and 9:16 now outperform square images on most networks. That is a third-party observation, not a rule, so the best shape is the one that shows your subject well.
Who it’s for
UGC creators
Check a photo before you send it to a brand, and hand over a copy at the size they asked for. A wrong shape is an easy reason for a revision request.
Brands and social managers
Check creator photos before they go on the feed, and see what the profile grid will do to a product shot before it is published.
Photographers and editors
Export once at the right size instead of letting Instagram crop and compress, and choose the crop yourself.
Common mistakes
Posting a 9:16 image as a post
A 1080 × 1920 image is taller than the 3:4 limit, so Instagram crops it to fit. Keep 9:16 for Stories and Reels, or crop to 4:5 or 3:4 yourself so you choose what stays.
Text at the edge of a square or 4:5
The profile grid shows a centred 3:4 slice (a guide, not Instagram’s own figure). Text near the left and right edge of a square can vanish from the grid, even though it shows in the feed.
Exporting wider than 1080 pixels
Instagram sizes anything wider than 1080 pixels down to 1080. A 4000-pixel export only makes a bigger file to upload.
Exporting narrower than 1080 pixels
A photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide is shared at its own width, so it looks softer than a 1080 pixel one. Below 320 pixels, Instagram enlarges it to 320.
Thinking 4:5 is the tallest shape
Instagram’s Help Center now lists 3:4 as the tall end of the range. If you cropped everything to 4:5 to be safe, you left 90 pixels of height unused at 1080 wide.
Mixing shapes in a carousel
The orientation you choose for a carousel (square, portrait or landscape) applies to every photo and video in it. Crop them all to the same ratio first.
Common questions
What is the best size for an Instagram post?
Use 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) for a standard portrait post, or 1080 × 1440 pixels (3:4) for the tallest shape Instagram accepts. Instagram’s Help Center says photos keep their quality up to 1080 pixels wide, and accepts shapes from 1.91:1 (wide) to 3:4 (tall). A square is 1080 × 1080 and a landscape photo is 1080 × 566.
What is the Instagram aspect ratio range for photos?
Instagram’s Help Center says it keeps a photo at its original resolution when the width is between 320 and 1080 pixels and the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. That is a height of 566 to 1440 pixels at 1080 pixels wide. If the ratio is not supported, Instagram crops the photo to fit a supported one.
Is 4:5 still the tallest Instagram post?
No. Some guides still say the tallest post is 4:5 (1080 × 1350), but on 16 October 2026 Instagram’s own Help Center listed 3:4 (1080 × 1440) as the tall end of the range. A 4:5 post is still fully supported, and it is the usual choice for the feed.
What size is the Instagram profile grid?
Instagram does not publish a grid size. Hootsuite (September 2026) and Buffer (March 2026) both report that the profile grid shows a centred 3:4 slice of every post, which Hootsuite gives as 1012 × 1350 pixels. That cuts about 3% from each side of a 4:5 post, 12.5% from each side of a square, and nothing from a 3:4 post. Treat it as a guide, not as Instagram’s own figure.
Is there a file size limit for Instagram photos?
Instagram’s Help Center page on photo resolution does not state one, so this checker does not check file size for Instagram posts. Third-party guides quote limits, but they are not Instagram’s own figures. If an upload fails, export the photo as a JPG at 1080 pixels wide and try again.
Is my photo uploaded when I use this checker?
No. The photo opens in your browser and never leaves your device, and the resized copy is made there too. Close the tab and it is gone. Shared links only carry your settings, such as the format, never the photo.
