Meta ad specs
1440 × 1800 px (4:5) for Facebook and Instagram Feed images, 1440 × 2560 px (9:16) for Stories and Reels
Every Meta placement has its own size, shape and limits, and Meta publishes them on separate pages. Pick a placement, drop in an image or a video, and see whether it fits, what changes and why, then download an image at exactly the right size. It all runs in your browser.

Meta publishes ad specs on a separate page for each placement and ad type, in its Ads Guide, so the numbers below come from several pages and each row links its own. Images are JPG or PNG and video is MP4 or MOV (the Ads Guide also lists GIF for video). Where a page gives a recommended size, it is shown; where it gives a minimum, the row says so. Everything here is Meta’s own text, checked on 16 October 2026.

Meta’s pages do not always agree. Its Instagram Feed image page lists 4:5 and its Instagram Feed video page lists 9:16, and its table of ratios by placement lists 1.91:1, 16:9, 1:1 and 4:5 for Instagram Feed. Stories ads need at least 500 pixels of width for an image and 250 for a video. Meta’s carousel Help page gives 1024 × 1024 for a square card in one section and 1080 × 1080 in another; this checker uses the Facebook Feed Ads Guide’s 1080 × 1080. Stories and Reels have separate Facebook and Instagram options because their limits differ. The checker says which page a result relies on.
How the checker works
- Pick the placement. Your file’s width, height, type, size and (for a video) length are read in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- Its shape is compared with the placement’s, using the tolerance that placement states: 3% for Facebook Feed and carousels, 1% for Instagram Feed and Stories.
- For Instagram Feed images, a shape from 4:5 to 1.91:1 is kept whole by Meta, so it is marked “Fits with changes” and the download crops it to the format you picked. A shape outside the range is cropped by Meta.
- Its width is compared with the placement’s minimum and its size with the recommended one. A photo and a video get their own limits, because Meta gives them different ones.
- For an image, the download crops to fill (which you can move) or fits the whole picture on bars, at the placement’s recommended size.
Facebook ad sizes
For Facebook, Meta’s Ads Guide recommends 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 pixels for Feed image ads, and the video page gives the same shape and size, with at least 120 pixels each way and up to 241 minutes. Two more Facebook placements want a square: the right column and Marketplace both recommend 1:1 at at least 1080 × 1080. A carousel uses the same 1:1 shape for each of its two to ten cards. The right column image is small, so Meta recommends putting no text on it.
Feed
4:5, 1440 × 1800. Up to 3% off the shape is accepted for images.
Right column
1:1, at least 1080 × 1080, and no text on the image.
Marketplace
1:1, at least 1080 × 1080, up to 30 MB.
Carousel
1:1 cards, at least 1080 × 1080, two to ten per ad.
Ad text limits
Meta’s Business Help says the recommended text length for most placements is 125 characters for the primary text, 40 for the headline and 25 for the description, and that text may be truncated further across placements and devices, so keep it as short as possible. Placement pages give their own figures where they differ. The checker does not check text, because a file does not carry it; the table is here so the limits are in one place.
| Placement | Primary text | Headline | Other |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most placements | 125 | 40 | Description 25 |
| Facebook Feed (video page) | 50 to 150 | 27 | |
| Instagram Feed | 125 | 40 (image page) | Up to 30 hashtags |
| Facebook Stories (image page) | 125 | 40 | |
| Marketplace (image page) | 125 | 40 | Description 30 |
| Carousel | 80 | 20 | Description 18 |
| Facebook right column | 40 | ||
| Facebook Reels (video page) | 40 | 55 | No auto captions |
Who it’s for
Media buyers
Check a creative against the placement before it goes into Ads Manager, and see which placements it will and will not fit.
Brands working with creators
Check a creator’s file against the shape and size the ad needs, and ask for the right one the first time.
UGC creators
Hand a brand a file that already meets the placement’s limits, so there is no revision for a wrong shape.
Common mistakes
One square for every placement
Meta recommends 4:5 for Facebook Feed and Instagram Feed image ads and 9:16 for Stories and Reels. A 1:1 file is accepted in many places but is the recommended shape only for the right column, Marketplace and carousels.
Assuming the 3% tolerance is everywhere
Facebook Feed images and carousels allow 3% off the shape. Instagram Feed and Stories allow 1%. A file that passes on Facebook can fail on Instagram.
Making an Instagram Feed video at 4:5
Meta’s Instagram Feed video page lists 9:16 at 1080 × 1920, while its Feed image page lists 4:5. Check which one the ad is before you export.
Text on a right column image
Meta’s Ads Guide recommends not adding text to right column images because the image is small. Put the message in the headline instead.
Mixed shapes in a carousel
Meta recommends 1:1 for each carousel card, two to ten cards, with a 3% tolerance. A card that is a different shape is cropped or padded.
Primary text that runs long
The recommended length for most placements is 125 characters, and Meta warns text can be truncated further. Put the point in the first line.
Common questions
What are the Meta ad specs?
They depend on the placement. Meta’s Ads Guide recommends 1440 × 1800 pixels at 4:5 for Facebook Feed and Instagram Feed image ads, 1080 × 1920 at 9:16 for Instagram Feed video ads, 1440 × 2560 at 9:16 for Stories and Reels ads, and a 1:1 shape of at least 1080 × 1080 for the Facebook right column, Marketplace and carousel ads. Images are JPG or PNG up to 30 MB, and video is up to 4 GB.
What size are Facebook ads?
For Facebook Feed, Meta’s Ads Guide recommends 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 pixels for image and video ads, with at least 600 pixels of width for an image. The right column takes a 1:1 image of at least 1080 × 1080, Marketplace takes 1:1 at least 1080 × 1080, and carousel cards are 1:1 at least 1080 × 1080, two to ten per ad.
What size are Instagram ads?
For Instagram Feed image ads, Meta’s Ads Guide recommends 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 pixels, with shapes from 4:5 to 1.91:1 allowed. Its Instagram Feed video page lists 9:16 at 1080 × 1920. Stories and Reels ads are 9:16 at 1440 × 2560.
Why does Facebook Feed allow 3% off the shape and Instagram Feed only 1%?
Meta states an aspect ratio tolerance on each placement’s page, and they differ: 3% for Facebook Feed image ads and for carousel ads, and 1% for Instagram Feed and for Stories. A 1080 × 1380 image is about 2% off 4:5, so it passes on Facebook Feed and does not on Instagram Feed.
What are the character limits for Meta ads?
Meta’s Business Help says the recommended text length for most placements is 125 characters for the primary text, 40 for the headline and 25 for the description, and that text may be truncated further on some placements and devices. Some placement pages give their own figures, such as 50 to 150 and 27 for Facebook Feed video ads.
Can I check an ad creative before it goes into Ads Manager?
Yes. The checker works on your own device: the file is read by your browser, nothing is sent to Meta, Myah or any server, and the resized copy is made there too. So you can check a creator’s draft before it is in any ad account. A shared link only carries the placement and settings you chose.
